Purpose Statement

Certified Educational Staff Associates in school counseling deliver a comprehensive program encouraging academic, career and personal/social development for all students.  They serve a vital role in maximizing student achievement and continuously seek out professional development opportunities to increase their capacity to meet evolving student needs. Incorporating leadership, advocacy and collaboration with administration and staff, professional Educational Staff Associates promote equity and access to opportunities and rigorous educational experiences for all students. Additionally, they support a safe learning environment focused on student needs and work to safeguard the human rights of all members of the school community. Collaborating with other stakeholders to promote student advocacy and achievement, school counselors address the needs of all students through prevention and intervention programs that are a part of a comprehensive site-based program and work in close collaboration with school administration to find solutions to the barriers of student success.

Selection Process

A committee will conduct screening and interviewing of applicants.

 

Functions

  1. Provide universal Tier I support services to middle school students, e.g. grief counseling, friendship development, academic improvement, bullying/harassment, involvement in activities, etc.).
  2. Assist administration with master schedule development and participate in Skyward trainings
  3. Coordinate and facilitate student course registration and enrollment.
  4. Coordinate and implement state and district assessments in cooperation with administration and district assessment staff, e.g., MAP, MSP, SBA, etc.
  5. Coordinate and facilitate 504 referral process, meetings and 504 plans as well as other students in need of student learning plans.
  6. In partnership with middle school and high school counseling/admin staff, coordinate and implement a high school transition program from the middle school to high school.
  7. Facilitate and teach school-wide anti-bullying/harassment instruction and curriculum.
  8. Facilitate building level CARE team within a multi-tiered system of response; provide direct academic/social-emotional support services based on CARE team recommendations and student/parent/staff referral
  9. Compose a wide variety of materials or report generation regarding student data at OHS/HHS including but not limited to: student achievement data, scholarships, progress reports and grades, college entrance requirements for purpose of enhancing student success.
  10. Monitor student progress (district and state assessments, specifically MAPs and MSP, registrations, transcripts, home school experience) for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action for increasing students’ success.
  11. Support students via the College Upward Board and other programs within a college and career readiness mindset
  12. Supervise students during lunch, assemblies and other events as needed.
  13. Stay abreast of current professional counseling trainings, conferences, workshops, and professional guidelines

 

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

The counselor shall possess the knowledge, skill and experience necessary to develop a career assessment and occupational information system that supports exploration and promotes students building connections between school, home, community and future career possibilities.  He/she shall possess the knowledge, skill and experience to create opportunities for students within the school system and the community that support and integrate academic learning, social-emotional development, and a post-secondary plan.  He /she shall possess the knowledge, skill and experience in developing articulations with post secondary institutions and strong communication skills between feeder schools and our community business partners.

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational policies to achieve organizational objectives; providing information and/or advising others. Utilization of significant resources from other work units is sometimes required to perform the job’s functions. There is continual opportunity to significantly impact the overall impact on student social-emotional health and academic well-being.

 

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking and 30% standing. This job is performed under minimal temperature variations and a generally hazard free environment.

 

Experience and Education: Minimum Qualifications

  • ESA Certificate in school counseling
  • High school teaching experience preferred
  • Prior experience working with high school students, especially those at risk
  • Prior experience in building community partnerships to meet school and student goals
  • Prior experience in developing school programs and community partnerships

 

Education:   Master’s Degree in Counseling

Equivalency:  ESA Certification in School Counseling

Continuing Educ./Training                                  Clearances

CEU Requirements                                                    Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance

National Guidance Model Training                             TB Clearance
