Job Summary:

This position assists a certificated teacher or other staff member with instructional and non-instructional activities for students in need of special education support in and out of the classroom. Responsibilities include tutoring students, correcting classroom work, monitoring student behavior, adapting curriculum (under the guidance of the teacher), preparing and assisting with mainstreaming activities and preparing classroom materials.

 

This position is 7 hours per day, Monday through Friday. Assignment areas may be in various classrooms. 

 

Selection Procedure:

A successful applicant will posses the following characteristics: flexibility during the school day, good communication skills with students/staff, good basic academic knowledge, and be able to implement minor discipline decisions as allowed by the building principal. A committee will conduct screening and interviewing of applicants. A successful applicant will have at least two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education; or hold an Associate's Degree; or meet a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics; or knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing in reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematic readiness.

 

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Provides instruction to students individually or in small groups in a variety of learning activities assigned by the teacher; promotes student understanding of materials presented. Reinforces and reviews concepts and skills. Adjusts tasks to suit needs of students based on IEP and teacher guidance (i.e. adapt pace, volume).
  • Conducts, under the direction of the teacher, student testing (e.g. subject readiness, progress, etc.) for the purpose of assessing students’ placement and/or progress with assigned lessons.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.
  • Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. scheduling, filing, copying, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or administrator in providing necessary records/materials.
  • Provides verbal feedback and/or written documentation for the purpose of informing teacher/s and/or parents of students’ progress.
  • Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g. accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.

 

 

Knowledge and Skills:

SKILLS are required to perform single, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: administering first aid.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions.  Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: age appropriate activities.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.  Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.   Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited.  Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with school age children; working as part of a team; and maintaining confidentiality.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget.  Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the Organization’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.  Generally the job requires 25% sitting, 40% walking, and 35% standing.  The job is performed in hazardous conditions and in a clean atmosphere.

 

Mandatory Conditions of Employment:

  • Proof of High School diploma, or equivalent;
  • Have one of the following:
  • An AA Degree from an accredited academic college or university
  • A minimum of 72 college quarter credits
  • Have passed a district-recognized assessment of basic skills and instructional proficiency (currently the ETS test)
  • Completion of 14 hours of Fundamental Course of Study training as provided and directed by the District (OSPI and PESB requirement).
  • Successful clearance of the FBI and Washington State Patrol fingerprint background check.
  • Successful Washington State Sexual Misconduct clearance.
  • Completion of federal I-9 form.
