WAVA High School Counselor (Long Term Substitute through remainder of 2024-25 school year)

Washington Virtual Academies (WAVA), an Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) program of Omak School District, is seeking motivated and energetic WA State certified teachers to work in our innovative on-line educational environment. WAVA’s mission is to empower every student for success in learning, work and life.  WAVA’s core belief is that ALL students are capable of success – no exceptions.  WAVA teachers work primarily from their homes and must reside in WA State. 

 

Utilizing leadership, advocacy and collaboration, the WAVA School Counselor promotes student success by providing preventive services and responding to identified needs through implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program that helps guide all learners in their academic success, personal and social development, and career and college planning and readiness.

 

As part of their regular responsibilities, WAVA Counselors:

• Plans and presents synchronous daily individual and/or group guidance curriculum in WAVA platforms supporting student development using the school’s SEL program to promote equity and access for all students, improve achievement, attendance, and whole child outcomes in accordance with the master schedule
• Provides course selection and course scheduling support 
• Documents all contact with students and families in the TotalView Notes
• Keeps accurate and running records as prescribed by supervisor
• Prepares and reviews transcripts and other academic documentation for new and returning students
• Works collaboratively with teaching staff, administration, and other team members to develop a multi-year plan for inclusion in an Individualized Learning Plan and/or Grad Plan
• Analyzes, documents, and records student data to address student issues, needs, and challenges on a timely basis
• Provides responsive services to individuals or groups on academic and personal issues
• Assists students in the acquisition of study skills, academic opportunities, and benefits through synchronous instruction in small groups, workshops, and 1:1 sessions 
• Provides a support system that strengthens the efforts of teachers, staff, and parents including but not limited to SEL Professional Development for staff, parent, and student workshops
• Ensure successful partnerships with local colleges for dual credit programming
• Hosts and/or attends college and/or career planning sessions/fairs through in-person events or WAVA platforms
• Provides academic counseling, including recommendations on Advanced Placement (AP) and technical courses, to challenge and enrich student learning opportunities 
• Audits student schedules for candidacy for graduation and advancement as determined by school and state policies
• (Grades 8 to 12 only) Provides three 1:1 synchronous support sessions per year (beginning, middle, end) in WAVA platforms specifically for college and career planning
• Adheres to the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards & Competencies and the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors
• Makes referrals to appropriate agencies for long term support for students
• Analyzes and disaggregates schoolwide and school counseling and/or SEL program data
• Examines grades and grade-point averages in relationship to achievement
• Ensures that students have multiple pathways to graduation and success beyond their grade band using Tallo, K12’s Grad Plan and/or High School and Beyond Plan as directed by a school administrator
• Actively participates in Stride’s regional and national counselor professional learning communities
• Consults with families and students for academic and whole-child success 
• Attends IEP meetings and supports IEP referrals as necessary
• Makes 504 rereferrals when necessary
• Hosts quarterly FAFSA and Running Start information sessions 
• Collaborates with Administration and Student Resource Coordinators for crisis intervention and documentation
• Collects and submits NCAA documents for students
• Collaborates, plans, and hosts transition planning events for 5^th, 8^th, and 12^th Grade students 
• Supports families and students in navigating the SAT/ACT process though workshops, 1:1 sessions, and small groups
• Ensure all contact will be completed using WAVA platforms, work phone line, and/or work email

 

Qualifications:

• Appropriate state certification for school counselor
• Master’s degree in school counseling preferred
• Three (3) years of experience in counseling and/or advisement
• Available from Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 4:00 for meetings, PLCs, and other work requirements

 

Knowledge and Skills:

• Experience with distance learning
• Advanced coursework in counseling and administration
• Experience with Local, State, and Federals laws and mandated reporting
• Experience with state career planning systems, Pathfinder, or other career planning platforms/tools
• Proficiency in or willingness to learn and use with fidelity Microsoft Office Suite, Web-based search engines, and other systems including Skyward, EDS, Tallo, Grad Planner, Stride Systems, TotalView Suite, the OLS and OMHS
